We stayed here for Christmas 2015, this was our third in Castleton, but the first in Cavedale. The very helpful owner had sent a text to my sister telling her that we could check in early as it was all ready. This was great for us as we could get down there and settled in before nightfall. Another bonus was the chocolate cake, mince pies and caramel tarts! Together with the tasteful Christmas decorations this made out stay very special. The cottage was cosy and welcoming. The kitchen was extremely well equipped – we cooked our Christmas dinner and had all we needed – with good quality implements. The entertainment system was very impressive, though we did have to consult the owner about how to operate it (technical dunces), with Apple TV and the Chromecast there was no worry of us not having anything to watch on the rainy days and evenings. The TV is huge – makes a difference as usually in holiday rentals it is tiny. I guess in summer you might not want to watch TV much, but it was a nice touch in winter. The WiFi was strong throughout our stay. The bedrooms were comfortable and the bedding top quality. I was lucky enough to claim the enormous bed; I slept really well! The bathroom was clean and warm and the Jacuzzi bath a nice touch. The stone floors downstairs are really good for muddy paws, so much easier to keep it clean. We found the owner extremely helpful, he answered any queries within minutes and was quite happy to explain the TV system. His priority was on providing a great stay, and this was certainly proven. Our third cottage in Castleton, and definitely the best.

Stayed in Cavedale for a long weekend at the end of November – the cottage was very easy to find with great directions and advise re parking The cottage is just lovely – it has been well presented with both taste and good quality – if I had been staying longer I would have had to tried out the Aga ? Great location for walking and importantly the local pubs and restaurants – really great base and location – we walked Saturday then visited the Bakewell Christmas market the next day The owners were extremely helpful – couldn’t have wished for more

This is THEE absolute most cosy, character filled, inviting Cottage, in thee most beautiful setting and quintessential village!!! From the time we contacted Johan to sort our booking to the time we pulled the door latch closed for the last time, we were in the best of care!! We enjoyed a wonderful four days in beautiful Castleton, our first visit! The cottage is more dear than the photo’s reveal! We were welcomed with lush homemade scones, strawberry jam, clotted cream and a fresh bottle of milk for a warming cuppa!! Even our two little dogs were welcomed with a plush bed, towel, water and food dishes; so kind you allow dogs, and yet there isn’t a hint of dog in the place! The cottage is quaint and perfectly quirky, stepping back in time with subtle modern day conveniences. We enjoyed a wood burner, comfortable beds, Jacuzzi bath tub, great cookware and crockery, a dishwasher, washer/dryer, Gaggia espresso maker and a gorgeous Aga cast iron stove…great for cooking and baking! There is a HUGE television with all the amenities you could imagine, as well as an expansive DVD library!! The television reception skips just a wee bit from time to time, but that’s to be expected surrounded by breathtaking hills in a remote location, and really, telly just isn’t that important when you have all this comfort and beauty! The village is all but a minutes walk away with plenty of pub and restaurant options as well as great shops! The Cavedale walk is at your doorstep, as is Peveril Castle and numerous caves (Blue John Gems) and hillsides!! Thank you, Johan, for providing such an outstanding getaway, we hope we’ll always have it to return to!!!

We justed returned from our one-week-holiday in the Peak District. This superb cottage was our retreat area not only due to the excellent log burner. The best compliment came from our two little children (3 mo and 2 y) who felt very comfortable and really loved the cottage.

After a kind welcome (with scones, cream and jam) the owner answered every little question we had (even while being ill).

We found everything we needed …
… and many more: fast WIFI, DVD-player and XBOX (we only tried once) and superior of all, a real GAGGIA espresso maker (which I´d have expected at last here in England!!!!)

Concluding we highly recommend this cottage due to the perfect communication with the owner (as we´re from Austria), the excellent equipment and the stunning location!

We stayed here at the end of November and the cottage was just perfect. Could have moved in as a permanent resident. Lovely scones, clotted cream and jam to welcome us. After a day walking the fells, an evening eating in the wonderful pubs, coming home to a log fire and the sounds of owls hooting outside was heaven. Booked again for this year – who wouldn’t?

We have just returned from a fabulous 4 night stay in Cavedale Cottage. Everything was brilliant, from the initial contact with Johan to book the cottage right down to the moment we left this morning. The cottage is clean, well thought out and well equipped as well as being quirky and full of character! The log burner is a very welcome sight after a day out hiking around Derbyshire! Our dog made himself at home, either snoozing on the ‘under the stairs’ luxury dog bed or flaking out in front of the log burner every evening. We couldn’t find a fault with it if we tried. Already trying to work out when our next stay will be!

We stayed here for a week in October (my husband I and the dog) and it was lovely. There were scones, clotted cream and jam on arrival as well as a personal message from the owner with his contact details on for any queries. The owner also sent me a text to say when the cottage was ready. I thought this was very professional and reassuring.

The only little niggles i had was the tv reception was hit and miss and the cottage was very low in places, however it was a cottage in the middle of the derbsyhire dales so really is to be expected!! The location was excellent, a minutes walk from the village and the facilities within the cottage were high quality. I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a relaxing and comfortable break in a gorgous village.

In terms of the village – the pubs were all really nice, plus the new restaurant 1530 was very good. Treak Cliffe cavern was worth a village, as was Chatsworth house plus the plague village Eyam and the museum. A lot of history and very interesting. If your a bird lover a visit to Riverside Cafe at Hathersage (just outside) is a must…

Stunning location for our Family holiday- attractive cottage on various levels. welcome scone tray and milk in the fridge, ready for a well needed cup of tea! Our dog loved the luxury dog bed and bowls provided. Stunning walks from the cottage to enjoy and very good local eating places especially the Peak and Old Cheese inn, both brilliant!!
The Rayburn made cooking interesting ,just to help others the oven needs 15 mins to heat up and about level 6/7 seemed about right for most cooking of pizzas etc.
Great communication from Johan ,most helpful when we required some thin blankets as the duvet was too heavy and hot for us ,he also helped with the instruction of the heating ,extra towels and a teapot were delivered.
I would recommend the cottage as a great base to explore the area.
Well done Johan!!!

Stayed for 10 nights in this lovely cottage with my partner and dog. Firstly – LEVELS! Each part of the cottage – living room, dining room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms are all on different levels. Even the very pretty rock garden is split across levels. It made for a very unusual but wonderful cottage experience. A lot of attention has been paid to detail and the kitchen was well stocked with good quality pots/pans/utensils/dishes/glasses etc. It is a beautifully presented property and the fireplace and jacuzzi bath was a nice touch. There is a range cooker in the kitchen, so cooking in the oven is a little tricky for novices such as myself, but it was a fun novelty nevertheless.

Castleton itself is a gorgeous little village with views aplenty, nice pubs, a fair bit to see and do (Peveril Castle and the various showcaves) and a good bakery with substantial cake portions! Overall, we had a comfortable stay and the owner of the cottage was very welcoming and accommodating and went out of his way to help us get the most out of our holiday. We even had a bottle of wine and a cheese selection waiting for us on arrival. The washing machine and tumble dryer made life easier (less packing) and there was a dog bed, dog towel and dog bowls provided. Ocado will even deliver food to the address, a real bonus considering we don’t have a car.

Nothing bad to say really, a hairdryer would be a nice touch and a few tea bags and sugar (but there was wine and cheese instead, so no real loss!). Everything else is A+ and we’d love to visit again. The fast wi-fi is also a bonus and picking up the key was a breeze (keycode box outside the property). Getting to the cottage without a car was OK as well, 25min train journey from Sheffield to Hope and then a 5min bus journey to Castleton. Just check the times as trains run every approx every 2 hours and buses every hour or so. There are so many walks to do in the area, that a car is almost unnecessary. Highly recommended.
